Accepting
help is something that is extremely challenging for all of us at one time or
another.
It can be especially hard for those of us who believe that seeking help undermines our independence & our ability to cope.
However,
by refusing to accept help, we disregard the fact that we are social beings who
need to cooperate with one another.
Here’re
some methods you can apply to your life, helping yourself to change your
thinking and become more receptive to help in future…
Let's Begin
#1 Decide If You Are Worried About Other’s Thinking
There are many possible reasons that might be influencing your reluctance to seek help from others. One is your concern about how others view you.
You may feel that you don't need help, or that any person offering help is threatening your independence. You may believe suddenly accepting help from others makes you weak.
Sometimes, in adulthood at your age you may think you must take responsibility by yourself. This results to make you believe that it’s socially wrong to ask to friends & family for assistance.
You
may battle with fears of rejection or have a tendency to towards perfectionism.
Or, you might feel that they are unable to handle their own affairs & you’ll
give burden to them.
These
thoughts can cause you to avoid accepting help from others.
#2 Move Beyond Your Need For Outside Approval
Believing that others will judge you or reject you may be interfering with your ability to seek help when you need it.
You
need to learn to not internalize judgments or rejections. You should fight
approval seeking with self-acceptance.
Become
more accepting of yourself by recognizing your strengths. And when you are
aware of your positive characteristics, others judgment or rejection impacts
you less.
#3 Say Good-Bye to Fear of Vulnerability (Open)
When
you think about it, the emotional exposure required to ask another for help can
be quite uncomfortable. Not wanting to show vulnerability can cause you to refrain
from asking for help.
However,
Being Open to others deepen the connection.
Applaud
yourself for slightest efforts. You need to acknowledge, give love &
acceptance to yourself.
#4 Reinforce Unrealistic Ideals
Sometimes,
there are reinforcing societal ideals that can make it seem like a weakness to
need help.
In
common themes running through movies, books, games, etc. shows viewpoint of
successful heroes or leaders. These ideals are one among many approaches, you
might be more likely to seek help.
Some
people have tendency to think that you should be able to cope alone or to
manage without help. Many of us see the world as it “should be” rather than it
“actually is”. But this isn’t healthy thinking in long term.
#5 Don’t Create Barrier
By
making yourself aloof from others, you are building an invisible barrier around
yourself that wards off the potential for new relationships & friendships.
It
can be deceptive to think that you can give help & advice but never need to
accept it in return. This ultimately just leads to loneliness & despair as
it only serves to isolate you from others.
You
should consider about times you have helped others which can give you
confidence in asking others for help or advice in their areas of expertise.
#6 Don’t Be Fooled By Own Expertise
Being
trained in one field of expertise does not provide you with immunity from
continuing to seek help from others.
Your
skills will be all better from asking help and gaining access to new methods &
ideas.
#7 Don’t Second Guess Yourself
Always
follow your first mind. The minute you have a conscious thought that you are
facing something you cannot alone handle, seek out help. Remember to
make a note of the solutions you receive for your problems.
Decide
who you will ask, phrase the request in your head and go & ask for help.
#8 Accept Kindness
If
another person is being kind in offering help, accept it.
Caution:
There are people with bad intentions, but there are also people who wants to do
good. Look for those people in the world & stop focusing on the negative.
Seek
out goodness & restore faith. Best way is to be a Volunteer.
#9 Be Selective
Choose
wisely & carefully from whom you would ask for help. Avoid people who make
you feel like a lesser person. Find people you really trust to try out asking
for help first.
This
will allow you to open up bit by bit & not be exposed to someone who might
purposely make you feel weak for asking.
#10 Understand Give & Take Dynamics
If
you keep cutting yourself off from opening up to others, you risk not sharing
your skills, talents & abilities with others in need of help.
Beyond
receiving anything in return, giving also promotes cooperation, strengthen
bonds & boost feelings of gratitude.
#11 Learn to Trust Others
In
order to receive help, you need to trust the other person and to trust that
you're worthy of help. This might be the hardest part but it is absolutely
vital.
Things
to keep in mind:
There
are both good & bad traits in people. So, modify your expectations. And
find yourself worthy of making wise decisions.
#12 Let Go Problems
Forgiving,
accepting & letting go your problems that no one can fix it. If you need
help, don’t be afraid to ask for it.
