This article has been divided into 5 Parts as per S.M.A.R.T. for better understanding & improving chances of success.

Let’s Begin

Part 1 of 5: S.M.A.R.T [Specific]

S.M.A.R.T [Specific]

The first step in setting up any goal must be to decide what to achieve, whether it be a long-term or short-term, start by deciding a general idea of what you want.

S.M.A.R.T [Specific]

Now it’s time to make that general idea to specific idea by applying details & defining your terms. You have a much greater chance of accomplishing a specific goal than a general goal. So, translate your thoughts to something more specific.

S.M.A.R.T [Specific]

A good way to make goals be specific is to answer some W’s questions to yourself.

W’s includes: Who, What, Where, When, Which & Why.

The W’s Questions

♦ Determine WHO is Involved

♦ Ask WHAT Specifically You want to Accomplish

♦ Determine WHERE this will Happen

♦ Think about WHEN this will Happen

♦ Identify WHICH Requirements & Obstacles will be Part of the Process

♦ Reflect on WHY you are Setting this Goal

Part 2 of 5: S.M. A.R.T [Measurable]

S.M. A.R.T [Measurable]

After Specific Goal, it’s time to establish a criteria for success. This will make it easy for you to track your progress towards your goal. Having measurable goals makes it easy to determine if you are making headway.

For e.g. if time has passed & your progress isn’t satisfactory, it’s time to change your strategy. This way, you can release the stress you might be feeling about your efforts.

Part 3 of 5: S.M.A.R.T [Achievable]

S.M.A.R.T [Achievable]

Make sure the goal you have set can actually be achieved. Otherwise, it will lead to disappointment & discourage. By identifying the obstacles, set up duration of competition & be ready to face the challenges & overcome them.

S.M.A.R.T [Achievable]

Be realistic about the amount of time you have to devote to your goals. If your goal lies in Future & isn’t achievable in present, set a new one that will be a helping hand to your Future goal.

S.M.A.R.T [Achievable]

Remember, Never to Give Up. Even if your goal is theoretically achievable, you must be committed to making efforts necessary to reach it.

Part 4 of 5: S.M.A.R.T [Realistic]

S.M.A.R.T [Realistic]

It’s important to consider how your goals fits with other plans you have in life. Adjust your goal to fit in reality as per your life scenarios. So, setting goals with what you are passionate about lets you care deeply about realistic & achievable. That goal will be more motivating & worthwhile to you.

Part 5 of 5: S.M.A.R.T. [Timely]

S.M.A.R.T. [Timely]

Defining a Deadline for completion of your goal helps identify & stick to specific actions you need to take towards that goal. It removes “Some Other Day or In Near Future” quality. Also, it removes internal pressure to accomplish the goal.

S.M.A.R.T. [Timely]

Divide & Conquer, i.e. set benchmarks to your long-term goals. This helps measuring & managing your progress. Appreciate yourself after achieving each milestone.
